Our environmental credentials
Doble Quality Foods are committed to protecting the environment, particularly in Cornwall. In order to minimise our carbon footprint we use “green” electricity i.e. electricity from renewable sources (predominantly wind). Our refrigeration plant has been the subject of two best practice guides. To further enhance its efficiency we have this year (2007) invested very heavily in new plant. Most of our vehicles use eutectic beam refrigeration which is charged up over night using green electricity. This form of refrigeration requires no energy input from the vehicle engine again minimising pollution.
Transport is of course a major part of our business and again we take great care to minimise our carbon footprint from this source. We use a mix of vehicle sizes to enable us to use the most efficient vehicle for each run. Most of our vehicles are British built with the smaller ones being built in Europe and have air management (streamlining) kits fitted which again minimises their carbon footprint. We carefully monitor our vehicle mileage and relate this to the tonnage and sterling value delivered to ensure that our routing is also efficient. All our vehicles are sourced to be as efficient and environmentally friendly (emissions) as possible. In addition to this we increasingly source bio-diesel; in 2006 40% of our usage was bio-diesel.
Waste minimisation is also high on our agenda; we carefully monitor water usage to keep it low and use a little as possible of secondary packaging, primarily reusing surplus outer boxes where possible. Inevitably there is a quantity of surplus cardboard and pallet wrap plastic to dispose of; all of this goes to the recycling centre in Redruth. Office waste is disposed of through the Carrick Bumper Box scheme and in total no more than one bin a week goes to land fill.
We source and sell as much local produce as possible and very actively support the Cornish food industry. Large articulated vehicles are the most efficient way to transport large quantities of food over long distances when full. Obviously a lot of what we sell comes from father afield but here too we work to minimise the environmental impact by having loads consolidated through our Fairway Central Cold Store facility which is based in the heart of the food processing industry in England. When you buy from us you can be sure that the products you buy have arrived in Cornwall in the most efficient way possible and then travel the least distance possible to you. Buying from Doble’s reduces to a minimum the food miles your produce travels.
